Tories Stop Public Meetings

12.00.00am GMT Sat 1st Nov 2003

The Cabinet has decided that the Council will no longer hold public meetings.

Cabinet members received a great deal of criticism at the three public meetings that were held during 2002. They claim that the Council consults in other ways; but public meetings were the only way in which residents could debate issues with Cabinet members. No Cabinet member attended the recent round of public meetings to explain the new, much criticised, waste collection scheme. It was left to officers.

Some suspect that Cabinet members are "running scared" of the electorate in 2003?
