The Liberal Democrats have backed plans in the European Parliament to insist that insurance companies and banks treat men and women equally.

Other parties voted against the proposal: the Lib Dems were the only mainstream British political party to support the plans. Local campaigner Marguerita Morton said "Insurers for health and motor insurance often use gender when calculating the risk. Liberal Democrat support for this vote will help to ensure that people are insured as individuals, not as gender stereotypes."
