Big jump in car parking prices seen5.36.25pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 4th Jun 2004 Parking charges in Camden Road and Beech Street car parks, both in St. James's Ward, are set to more than double from the present £325 to £670 a year. Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has justified this proposed hike by claiming that it would bring these car parks, as well as that in Union Square on the Pantiles, into line with multi-storeys elsewhere in the town centre. However, St. James's Ward Councillor David Neve said the benefits claimed for standardising car parking charges throughout the town at £670 a year hid some sizable increases. "I think someone's trying to pull the wool over our eyes," Councillor Neve told the local KM Extra newspaper. The basic hourly rate at Camden Road, Beech Street and Union Square car parks will rise to 60 pence, in line with the multi-storeys. Longer stay rates would increase accordingly. If implemented, the rises will come into effect on October 1st.
