The new proposals have been announced by Lib Dem Home Affairs spokesman, Nick Clegg MP

The Liberal Democrats have unveiled a new policy on sentencing, which will be more honest, simpler and tougher on the worst offenders. Proposals include: ending confusion over life sentences by introducing a new 'life custody' sentence under which life will mean life and the end of automatic early release.

"These proposals will make the justice system more transparent and effective" said local party chair, Alan Bullion. "Judges need freedom to give meaningful sentences - with automatic early release for most offenders, a ten year sentence means serving only five. No wonder people don't trust the system!"
